KEY DATES IN THE HISTORY OF SENEGAL

2nd to the 11th century : The Empire of Ghana.

9th century : The Empire of Tekrour, founded in the dying days of the Empire of Ghana.

1080 : The beginning of Islamization, under the Almoravide Dynasty.

13th century : The rise of Djolof Empire in the centre of Senegal.

13th and 14th centuries : The Empire of Mali is based in eastern Senegal.

15th century : Arrival of the first colonists (Portuguese). Established the first trading posts on the Cap-Vert Peninsula, at Goree, Rufisque and Joal.

16th century : Start of the slave trade, organised by the Portuguese.

1617 : The Dutch settle at Goree.

1626 to 1659 : French colonization on the future site of Saint-Louis.

End of the 17th century : Goree taken by the English then again by France.

From 1758 to 1814 : The English and the French fight over Saint-Louis and Goree.

15th of April 1789 : A dispatch sent to the Constitutional Convention at Versailles - "A List of Complaints and Remonstrances".

1802 : The colony represented at "The Meeting of Five Hundred" (Paris).

30th May 1814 : Senegal is given to France by the Treaty of Paris.

1815 : France views itself as having a monopoly of all trade out of Senegal. The slave trade abolished.

1816 : Shipwreck of "La Méduse" off the coast of Mauritania.

1848 : Abolition of slavery.

1854 to 1865 : Faidherbe becomes governor of the colony. Dakar is established. The kingdoms of Djolof and Kayor are overthrown.

1862 : Pinet-Laprade designs a town plan for Dakar.

1882 : Under French governor Servatine the railway between Dakar and Saint-Louis is constructed...

1895 : A central governing body for French West Africa is formed :"Le Gouvernement général de l'Afrique Occidentale Française (A.O.F.)".

1904 : Dakar becomes the capital of the A.O.F.

1916 : The inhabitants of the "Quatre communes" (Dakar, Goree, Saint-Louis and Rufisque) are granted French citizenship. The first members sit at the "Chambre des Députés" in Paris.

1940 : The British Navy bombs Dakar.

1946 : The "Union Française" (French Union) is founded.

1956 : The blue-print law for the eight self-governing states of the A.O.F. (including Senegal) is voted.

1960 (April 4th) : Senegal is recognized as an independent state within the Federation of Mali.

1960 (August 20th) : Split up of the Federation of Mali.

1960 (September 5th) : Léopold Sédar Senghor is elected President of the Republic of Senegal ; he was to be President seven years running.

1962 (December 18th) : When accused of undermining the Parliament's rights, Prime Minister Mamadou Dia is arrested. Léopold Sedar Senghor holds and exercises the whole executive power.

1963 (March 3rd) : A referendum ratifies the new constitution of a presidential regime.

1970 (February 26th) : The constitution is reformed. President Senghor appoints Abdou Diouf as Prime Minister.

1971 (February) : French President Georges Pompidou pays a visit to Senegal.

1971 (November 2nd) : President Senghor goes to Israel and Egypt, along with three other African Heads of states, in order to act as mediator in the Middle East conflict.

1974 ( March 26th) : President Senghor announces the liberation of all the political prisoners ; the liberation will take place in April, for the 14th anniversary of the independence of the country.

1975 (February 4th) : Delegates from 110 developing countries and non-aligned countries meet in Dakar to discuss the prices of raw materials.

1976 (March 16th) : The National Assembly passes a law of amnesty for all political prisonners ; the law is to take effect from April 4th 1976.
In the course of April the constitution is reviewed thus allowing three political parties, with three different leanings, to set up. Apart from the UPS (governmental party) which will later become the PS (Socialist Party), are founded Abdoulaye Wade's party (PDS : liberal-democrat leanings), the PAI (African Party for Independence, led by Maihemout Diop whose leanings are Marxist-Leninist).

1977 ( April 20th) : The fourth Afro-French conference is held in the presence of French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.

1978 (February 26th) : Léopold Sedar Senghor is re-elected President of the Republic of Senegal ; for the first time he had to face an opponent, Abdoulaye Wade, leader of the PDS, who polled 17 % of the votes.

1978 (March 18th) : Diplomatic relations between the Ivory Coast, Guinea and Senegal are restored after the Heads of those States met in Monrovia.

1980 (December 31st) : Léopold Sedar Senghor leaves office in favour of Abdou Diouf the Prime Minister.

1981 (January 1st) : Abdou Diouf takes office as President of the Republic of Senegal.

1981 (November 14th) : The confederation of Senegambia is founded.

1982 (February 1st) : The confederation of Senegambia is officially announced.

1983 ( February 23rd) : Abdou Diouf is officially elected President of the Republic ; he polled 80 % of the votes when he stood as a candidate opposite four other candidates, in a universal suffrage election.

1983 (April 3rd) : Abdou Diouf takes the oath. A new government is set up.

1983 (April 29th) : The National Assembly passes a constitutional reform that abolishes the post of Prime Minister.

1983 (May) : Léopold Sedar Senghor is elected member of the "Académie Française" (French Academy).

1983 (December) : In Casamance, confrontations with the police caused the death of 24 persons ; the persisting discords makes an armed intervention necessary.

1984 (January 11th) : French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy arrives in Dakar on a four-day visit. Both co-operation and economic help on the part of France are consolidated.

1988 (February) : The economic and social context is one of crisis. Abdou Diouf is re-elected President of the Republic of Senegal polling over 73 % of the votes ; his own success is strengthened when his party wins the general elections by absolute majoriry. The opposition takes issue over the results ; riots and confrontation with the police cause the State of Emergency to be declared.

1989 (April 25th) : Following the looting of shops owned by Mauritanians in Senegal, about 200 Senegalese are slaughtered in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou in Mauritania ; curfew is then imposed.

March 2000 : Abdou Diouf loses the presidential elections.
Abdoulaye Wade's election as president puts an end to 40 years of continuous power by the Socialist Party
