Senegal lies between latitude 12.5°-16.5°
North and longitude 12° -17° West,
at the Western most extension of the African
continent.
The country is bounded on the West by the
Atlantic ocean (700 kms of coasts).
The bordering countries are from North to
South : Mauritania,
Mali,
Guinea,
Guinea
Bissau.
The
Gambia stretches from the coast toward
the interior of the Republic, thus almost
separating the Northern part from the Southern
.
The country has been divided into 10
administrative regions grouping together
30 "départments" (divisions)
since March 24th 1984 : Dakar,
Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kolda, Louga, Saint-Louis,
Tambacounda, Thiès
and Ziguinchor.
Senegal is a multy-party democracy. The Prime
Minister is the Head of the Government.
The main ressources are fishing, tourism,
groundnut
and phosphates. |
