Senegal became a republic on November 15th,
1958 and was granted independence on August
20th, 1960. The March 7th 1963 constitution
was altered on February 22nd, 1970 and on
September 21st, 1991 as well as in 1992.
In 1993 it was decided that the President
of the Republic, elected by direct universal
suffrage for a 7-year term and re-eligible
once, would be in charge of the executive
power and determine the policy of the nation.
He appoints the Prime Minister, head of
the government.
The regime changed from a parliamentary
system (1962) to a presidential one with
the appointment of a Prime Minister (1970),
post which was to be suppressed in 1983
and then restored in 1991.
