OF CASAMANCE |
Casamance is a region that nestles
between the Gambia and Guinea Bissau ; it
is distinguished by its namesake river and
its main ethnic group, the Diola.
The Casamance River, over 300 kms long, is
a source of life for this southern region
of Senegal. Its main sources are the Diaboulou,
the Kamobeul basin and the Soungrougrou. The
whole area is a mass of tributaries, canals
and meandering streams.
This network of waterways, combined with the
heavy rains of the wet season and the high
ambient temperatures, (sometimes in excess
of 35°C.), makes Casamance the richest
agricultural region of the country.
Rice, sorghum, millet, maize, peanuts, palm
oil trees, date palms and fruit trees, all
grow here.
Fishing and the domestic rearing of poultry
and pig round out the abundance of foodstuffs
enjoyed by the local people. |
