215 kms east of
Saint-Louis, Podor used to be the capital
of one of the oldest kingdoms in the region,
the Tekror, established in the XIth century.
Later, Podor became a colonial post involved
in the slave trade, ivory and gum. |

One can still see the old merchants' houses
and warehouses along the River.
|
|
A fort was built in 1745 and re-constructed
in 1845 under the direction of Engineers
Captain Faidherbe.
Appointed governor of the colony, he contributed
to the development of Podor as a trading
post.
