RICHARD-TOLL
Richard-Toll is a small town, half-way between Saint-Louis and Podor. Its name comes from a Mr Richard, French gardener who started a farm here and from the word "Toll" meaning "garden" in Wolof. Mr Richard's agricultural project was reconsidered in 1932 and cotton, rice and cane-sugar farming was encouraged.
An architectural sight is Baron Roger's "folie" (Baron Roger was governor of the colony from 1822 to 1827) : a big colonial house built in the middle of a tropical garden which used to be very well tended.

Richard-Toll's main activity nowadays is owed to C.S.S. (Compagnie sucrière sénégalaise) which has been farming cane-sugar since 1967.
C.S.S. buildings are famous for their high chimneys.
The burning of the cane-sugar near Richard-Toll is spectacular.
