| SIGHT-SEEING
IN SAINT-LOUIS |
|
*Faidherbe Bridge : 500 metres long, entirely
designed by the Eiffel company (France)
in metallic girders.
Built in 1897, it is wrongly said to have
been designed to span across ...the Danube
!!!
* Faidherbe Square: also referred to as
"la Savane", with the statue
of General
Faidherbe.
* The "Gouvernance" (i.e. the
Governor's House): a typical example of
the early l9th century architecture.
* The cathedral: built in 1828.
* The Hotel de la Poste: typical of the
colonial architecture stands in front
of the Post Office building. Jean
Mermoz used to stay in this hotel
in the 1930's whenever he came to Saint
Louis. It is one of the finest hotels
in Saint Louis.
* The Fishermen district ( Guet-Ndar)
: once you have crossed the Servatius
bridge. Guet-Ndar is a main Senegalese
fishing port. It is well worthwhile going
there if only for the sake of the sight
of the pirogues when they break through
the bore .
* The Fishermen's Cemetery in Guet-Ndar:
fishing nets stand for grave stones.
*The Sor African market (opposite the
railway station).
|
* The
Langue de Barbarie National Park : 25
km south of Saint Louis (2,000 hectares
) . Not only is it a bird-sanctuary of world-wide
asset where you can watch, among other species
pink flamingos and pelicans, it also shelters
turtles, jackals and so on... The main hotels
of Saint Louis organize visits to the Park.

|
|
| |
| * The Djoudj National Park : even more spectacular
than Langue de Barbarie . World Heritage listing
. 70 km north-east of Saint Louis . Visits
are organized by the main hotels in town.
