Tourism Highlights in Senegal

Senegal offers a great variety of tourism opportunities, and you may find it difficult to decide between the many options.

Here are some highlights to help you in making your choices. Please remember that this is just a small taste of the many wonderful things to see and do in this breathtaking country.

Culture That Transcends Borders

Internationally renowned musician Youssou N’Dour brought the traditional sounds of Senegalese mbalax music to the attention of the world. N’Dour combines traditional Senegalese music with an eclectic mix of international styles, from hip hop and jazz to soul.  He has collaborated with international artists such as Sting, Wyclef Jean and Tracy Chapman to name a few. Not only has N’Dour won numerous international awards he has also served his country as Minister of Tourism and as Special Advisor to the President.

N’Dour is not the first Senegalese to bring Senegal’s culture to the international stage. Senegal’s first president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, was a poet-laureate and the first African to be elected to the Académie française.

The Saloum Delta National Park is of cultural significance as the home of the Serer people. Despite been one of the minority groups in Senegal, the Serer people have had a large influence on Senegalese culture and several modern Muslim festivals are rooted in ancient Serer religious festivals rather than Islam.

Historical Tourism

One of Senegal’s World Heritage Site’s is Gorée Island. While welcoming today, Gorée Island hosts a historic slave trading post that was part of the West African slave trade and is a reminder of Senegal’s dark colonial past.

For a brighter trip through history you can visit the old colonial town of Saint-Louis and view examples of colonial architecture from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage.

Nature Tourism

Senegal boasts over 20 national parks, reserves and marine protected areas. They provide a diverse range of opportunities from more developed reserves to remote specialty tour destinations.

Senegal is also home to one of the largest ornithological reserves in the world which is also a World Heritage Site, the Djoudj National Bird Park. This park is a bird watchers paradise and offers unparalleled opportunities for bird photography.

For wildlife viewing, your itinerary should include the Niokolo-Koba National Park which is yet another World Heritage Site. This national park offers the opportunity to see elephants, lions, and hippopotamuses.

300 Days of Sunshine

With over 700 km of coastline and sunshine for more than 300 days of the year Senegal offers breathtaking beaches to satisfy any sun-lovers cravings.

If your tastes run to sports and you love the  real money game offers at https://onlinecasinogames.co.nz/real-money/ , you can also indulge in a different sport – that of fishing, the Senegalese coast is also considered one of the best places to catch Sailfish in the world. The coastline and the over 300 km long Casamance River offer many more sport fishing catches than just Sailfish.

We hope that you have enjoyed this small highlight of Senegalese tourism. Hopefully you have been encouraged to not only explore more of the wonderful opportunities that Senegal has to offer but that you take the plunge and actually travel to this remarkable destination. You will undoubtedly create memories to be treasured.
